You've built the ultimate overland rig — rooftop tent, steel bumpers, drawers, water tanks, recovery gear. Then you drive it fully loaded and wonder why it handles like a boat. Here's what's happening — and how to fix it.
📊 Understanding GVM: The Number That Governs Everything
Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM) is the maximum legal total weight of your vehicle — including the vehicle itself, all passengers, fuel, and every piece of gear you carry. It's set by the manufacturer and stamped on your vehicle's compliance plate.
Here's the problem: most popular SA bakkies have a GVM that leaves surprisingly little payload margin once you account for the vehicle's kerb weight.
A typical example for a base-spec double-cab 4x4 bakkie:
- GVM: 3,190kg
- Kerb weight (factory): 2,150kg
- Available payload: 1,040kg
Now start adding accessories:
- Steel bull bar: ~50kg
- Steel rear bumper: ~25kg
- Rock sliders: ~20kg
- Roof rack: ~25kg
- Rooftop tent: ~55kg
- Drawer system: ~40kg
- Dual battery setup: ~30kg
- Water tank (full, 60L): ~65kg
- Auxiliary fuel (full, 40L): ~34kg
- Recovery gear: ~30kg
- 2 passengers + luggage: ~200kg
Total added weight: ~574kg — leaving only ~466kg of payload margin before you hit GVM. Add camping gear, food, and clothing and you're at or over GVM before you've even left the driveway.
Note: a steel bull bar's weight varies a lot by design — anywhere from around 30kg for a lighter nudge-bar style unit up past 80kg for a full winch-compatible bar with bash plates. We've used a representative mid-range figure above; check the spec sheet for your specific bar.
And that's before we talk about what all this weight does to your factory suspension.
🔧 What Factory Suspension Is Designed For
Factory suspension is engineered for a compromise: comfortable enough for daily driving, capable enough for occasional light loads. It is not designed for the constant, heavy loads of a fully kitted overland vehicle.
When you exceed the design load of your factory springs, several things happen:
- Rear sag — the vehicle sits nose-up, tail-down. Headlights point skyward, blinding oncoming traffic. Handling becomes unpredictable.
- Bottoming out — on corrugated roads, the suspension runs out of travel and the bump stops take the hit. Brutal on the vehicle and everything in it.
- Reduced ground clearance — a sagging rear means less clearance under your diff and chassis on technical terrain.
- Accelerated wear — overloaded springs and shock absorbers wear out significantly faster than designed.
- Dangerous handling — particularly when towing. A sagging rear combined with a trailer creates a recipe for trailer sway.
Worth being clear on one point: upgrading your springs and shocks doesn't change the legal GVM figure stamped on your compliance plate. What it does is let you carry the payload you're already legally allowed, without sagging, bottoming out, or premature wear. If your fully loaded weight exceeds your GVM, no suspension upgrade fixes that — you need to remove gear, or pursue a formal, engineer-certified GVM upgrade, which is a separate process entirely.

There are two primary approaches to solving the overloaded suspension problem — and the right choice depends on how you use your vehicle.

- Works with your existing suspension — complements rather than replaces your factory or upgraded springs and shocks.
Best for: Vehicles with variable loads — overlanders who sometimes run fully loaded and sometimes drive empty, or those who regularly tow. Air springs give you the flexibility that a fixed spring rate cannot.

The best suspension upgrade is the one you don't need because you've kept your build weight under control. Every kilogram saved in accessories is a kilogram of payload you can use for water, fuel, or gear.
This is why serious overland builders choose aluminium over steel wherever possible:
- Aluminium drawer systems — a quality aluminium drawer system typically weighs 15–30kg less than an equivalent steel unit. Over a full build, these savings compound significantly.
- Aluminium roof racks — aluminium extrusion racks are 30–40% lighter than steel equivalents with no meaningful strength penalty for typical overland loads.
